Cableship Pacific Guardian

Picture of the Pacific Guardian

The CS Pacific Guardian is a purpose-built submarine cable repair ship which maintains cables in the "Fiji Zone" i.e., the South Pacific region. The ship was previously based in Suva, Fiji but is now primarily based in Sydney in order to ensure a more effective maintenance coverage for Telstra's east coast submarine cables.

Whilst the ship is owned and operated by Global Marine Services Limited (GMSL), International Networks & Technology manage the financial, operational and contractual aspects of the ship agreement on behalf of the cable owners.

Propulsion and electric power generation
A single, fixed pitch propeller directly driven by Tandem DC electric motors, reversible and variable speed, having a total rating of 4400kW at 180/190rpm and for improved manoeuvrability bow and stern thrusters. 360 degrees Azimuth rotation, driven by variable speed DC motors rated at 750kW each. Two main diesels, Ruston type 12rkz rated at 2000kW each and two auxiliary diesels, Allen type 6S12F-HBC rated at 750kW each, supplying AC to an electrical distribution switchboard which feeds all shipboard electrical requirements including DC to main propulsion and thruster motors via individual thyristor convertors.

Cable Handling Machinery
Forward
: Two hydraulic, 3.5m diameter drum engines with maximum hauling load of 40 tonnes, each with hold-back provided by two hydraulic, three wheel pair traversing linear cable engines. Cable lead over the bow via split 3m diameter bow sheaves and tension measured by traversing saddleback dynamometers, both on the forecastle

Aft: 18 wheel pair, hydraulic linear cable laying engine capable of pay-out speeds of up to 8 knots with built-in tension measuring dynamometers and emergency cable clamp, paying out over a single 3m diameter stern sheave

Deck equipment One 5 tonne capacity bow hoist One 15 tonne SWL hydraulic telescopic crane on foredeck One 2 tonne SWL hydraulic telescopic crane on afterdeck (Foredeck crane has an SWL of 2.6 to 15 tonne, depending on boom extension)
