JASURAUS submarine cable is an optical fibre SDH system which provides high-speed, high-capacity telecommunications links between Australia, Indonesia and beyond. This cable uses Optical Amplification Technology in its 34 submarine repeaters. (The name JASURAUS is derived from the original planned landing points for the cable - JAkarta - SURabaya - AUStralia).
JASURAUS, linking Australia (Port Hedland) with Indonesia (Jakarta), connects Australia to the Asia Pacific Cable Network (APCN). APCN, in turn, provides access to nine major Asian destinations, with onward connection to other destinations (such as the US and Europe) via planned or existing submarine cable systems. (JASURAUS is also known as APCN/A - or the Australian Extension of APCN)
The 2,800 km JASURAUS cable was built to meet the sophisticated telecommunications demands of customers for new applications involving intemet, broadband and multimedia. Additionally, JASURAUS has the capacity to transmit some 60,000 simultaneous telephone conversations.
The A$160 million cable was a cooperative venture between Telstra Corporation Limited, Optus Communications, and PT Indosat.
The link uses optical fibre technology, with customers benefiting from error-free voice, data and image transmission; high levels of reliability; and high capacity (5 Gigabits/sec). The cable system bandwidth is extended to Perth (at VC4 level) via the International Cable Extension Capacity (ICEC).
The JASURAUS link utilises transmission equipment supplied by Alcatel, as well as submarine cable manufactured in their Australian cable factory at Port Botany in Sydney.
First level maintenance is provided by Port Hedland C&C Field Workforce (FWF) with third level support being provided by International Networks and Technology.
