The Australia - Japan cable when complete, is planned to provide a new and exciting underwater communications highway further linking Australia to the rapidly expanding Internet and data world. Demand for high quality international bandwidth is growing at an unprecedented rate. In order to provide Australian and international carriers and other customers, with an unparalleled combination of speed, quality and value, Australia Japan Cable (Holdings) Limited has been formed to build a new international submarine optical fibre cable between Australia and Japan, with additional connectivity in Guam. In the Northern Hemisphere, the North American, Asian and European continents are linked by a high capacity, low cost, global information highway. Australia has the potential to be directly connected to this information highway via the proposed 10,200 km Australia - Japan cable, planned to be ready for service in mid 2001. At 640 gigabits/sec, the planned new cable has greater potential design capacity than any existing cable from Australia and 500 times the existing PacRim cables connecting Australia to North America and Asia. The cable architecture, combined with the latest technology, is planned to ensure that customer demands for voice, high speed data and multimedia service capacity are met at globally competitive prices.
